Legendary Congolese musician, Papa Wemba is dead. He died after being rushed to the hospital early morning today (Sunday) as a result of him collapsing on stage while performing at Anoumabo Urban Music Festival in Abidjan , Ivory Coast.
Papa Wemba, whose real name was Jules Kikumba was aged 67. He was said to have slumped while singing his third song after being called on stage by 5.10 am local time.
He was known as King of Rhumba Rock and was vital to the development of Congolese music. He discovered great musicians like Kofi Olomide.
His demise is a great loss to African music.
